Related, But Not Necessarily the Internet

Page history last edited by Kayza Zajac 11 mos ago

Sometimes we get so focused on the internet, that we overlook the bigger picture, and other issues. It's important to remember that the internet is not the only use for a computer, and it is far from the only source of inappropriate materials.

Public Libraries Your local library is often a source of some extremely undesirable materials. Some libraries are worse than others, of course. But, even the best libraries will probably have materials that you may see as inappropriate for your children. Furthermore, even a reasonably conservative librarian may very well have very different views than you do on what is appropriate.

You need to know what your local library carries. That includes books, periodicals, and other media such as adio and video recordings. These materials can range from mildly inapproriate to totally antithetical to Torah values, and may be far too visible, especially to young folks.

At this point, most US libraries provide internet access to patrons. There may be no filtering at all, and even if tere is the level is low enough that it is really only useful for dealing with the most egregious problems.

Videotapes, CDs and DVDs Whether your child bought or borrowed a DVD, CD or tape, you need to ask the same questions about content as you need to regarding the internet, or anything coming from the library.  The latest HASC DVD won't worry you but, just about every successful film, and many not so successful films, come out on DVD.  XXX rating won't prevent that happening.  (Unfortunately, it actually makes it more likely.)  And, it's not only Hollywood films that you need to worry about.  There are more than enough other DVDs and CDs with content that has no place in any respectable home.

Games Games can be a very real problem.  Some games can be very educational, and greatly enjoyable.  But, many games, even educational ones, can be extremely violent and graphic.  Don't be lulled into a sense of security by awards and accolades. The game may win wards and high praise, and still be a problem.  Doom (Doom WIkipedia Article) is a classic example of a game that actually won awards, as well as being extremely popular, but which was extremely violent.  Needless to say, violence is not the only issue of concern. A current example of such a game is Grant Theft Auto 4. It's an extremely popular game, was named #1 of the Top 10 Video games by a major publication, and has received all sorts of accolades. Nevertheless, a non-jewish computer journalist who expresses distaste for rating systems other than the (way too lenient, in my opinion) official one, because they are "self righteous and narrow minded" says "there's no way in heaven or **** he's getting Grand Theft Auto – not while he's living in my house." it is uterly clear that this is absolutley not an appropriate game. Of course, not all situations are this extreme, but it really is important to keep the issue in mind.
